Last chance to comment on Wandsworth licensing scheme

Wandsworth Council is seeking feedback from residents, landlords, and tenants on proposed new licensing schemes aimed at raising housing standards in the borough. The consultation, which runs until Monday, 14 October, focuses on extending current licensing for Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and introducing selective licensing.

Key Proposals:

  1. Additional HMO Licensing: The council already mandates licensing for larger HMOs (with five or more residents sharing facilities). The proposed extension would apply to smaller HMOs, where three to four residents share kitchens or bathrooms.
  2. Selective Licensing Scheme: This scheme would target private rental properties occupied by single-family households or two unrelated sharers, in designated areas of Wandsworth.

Wandsworth’s cabinet member for housing, Aydin Dikerdem, emphasized that improving housing standards through these schemes is essential for providing safer and more robust accommodation. The goal is to ensure better support for both tenants and landlords and to enhance living conditions across the borough.

The findings of the consultation will be presented to the council’s Housing Committee, which will then decide on the implementation of these new measures.
