Landlords are expressing support for a new report from the Radix Big Tent Housing Commission, which emphasizes the urgent need to address the rental housing supply crisis. The report highlights that both institutional and private landlords play a crucial role in the housing market and should be given equal importance alongside volume housebuilders. The Commission argues that renters, whether by necessity or choice, deserve access to sustainable, high-quality, and safe homes.
This call comes as warnings from organizations like Zoopla, Rightmove, and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors highlight the persistent imbalance between the demand for rental properties and the supply available. The Commission also supports the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA)‘s plea for an overhaul of the justice system to complement the Renters’ Rights Bill. It advocates for a clear set of standards for both landlords and tenants regarding the justice system, as well as a roadmap to achieve them.
Ben Beadle, Chief Executive of the NRLA, welcomed the report, stating that the shortage of rental homes is limiting renters’ choices. He reiterated the need for institutional and private landlords to play a significant role in meeting housing demand and urged the government to implement the Commission’s recommendations to improve the justice system. Beadle called for clarity on how the courts will be prepared for the Renters’ Rights Bill to ensure fairness for both tenants and landlords.
