Sadiq Khan Proposes Building on London Green Belt to Tackle Housing Crisis

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has launched a public consultation proposing new affordable homes on parts of the London green belt, claiming the current system is “outdated and unsustainable.” With London needing 88,000 homes per year, Khan argues that brownfield sites alone are insufficient to meet demand.

The proposal, backed by Generation Rent and Angela Rayner, suggests building on low-quality green belt land could unlock hundreds of thousands of homes. Critics, including City Hall Conservatives, accuse Khan of failing to meet past targets despite having nearly £9bn in funding.
