Rayner May Lose Housing Brief in Cabinet Reshuffle

Angela Rayner could be stripped of her housing responsibilities in a potential reshuffle, according to Sky News. While she would remain Deputy Prime Minister, a leaked memo suggests the housing brief could be removed from her role as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government—just as the Renters’ Rights Bill nears enactment.

Deputy Political Editor Sam Coates reports that the reshuffle would distance Rayner from both credit and blame for the government’s pledge to build 1.5 million homes by mid-2029. A senior figure in her department is said to have warned that the target will only be met if the upcoming spending review provides a “generous settlement”.

Separately, a leaked memo obtained by the Daily Telegraph claims Rayner has suggested taxing savers to raise additional government revenue, potentially fuelling tension with Chancellor Rachel Reeves.

Commentator Anne McElvoy says the rumour of a reshuffle is circulating in Whitehall, though the government officially denies any imminent Cabinet changes. Nonetheless, “a lot of work” appears to be underway behind the scenes.
