Yet more hypocrisy from a council

Brent Council Sued Over ‘Unfit’ Council Home

A London family is suing Brent Council, claiming their council home is “unfit for human habitation.” Ms Eniola, a long-term tenant who has lived in the property since 1992, alleges that persistent rat and mouse infestations, widespread mould, and a broken kitchen sink have created intolerable living conditions.

She says the environment has severely affected her family’s mental and physical health—particularly her disabled son, whose asthma has reportedly worsened as a result of the mould and damp. “We feel depressed living like this,” she told reporters.

The case follows a pest control inspection in November 2024, which confirmed the infestation and damp, and recommended that the family be relocated. Despite this, Ms Eniola claims the council has taken no action and maintains no record of repeated surveyor visits she says were requested.

The lawsuit has attracted particular scrutiny because Brent Council has been actively cracking down on private landlords who fail to meet minimum housing standards. In a recent statement, a councillor said: “No one should have to live in damp, overcrowded or dangerous conditions.”

Brent Council has declined to comment on the ongoing legal proceedings.
