Private landlords are now facing eviction delays of over eight months, according to new data reported by The Telegraph — and the upcoming Renters’ Rights Bill may further strain the system.
Government figures show that in Q4 2024, the average time to repossess a property was 36.4 weeks, with current court waits at 32 weeks.
The government says it is working with the Ministry of Justice to prepare, and plans to digitise the County Court process to ease delays.
A government spokesperson added:
“We want to reduce demand on courts, ensuring only cases with a clear ground for possession proceed.”
With the Renters’ Rights Bill expected to become law soon, all eyes are on how the justice system will cope with the shift.
