The Daily Telegraph has reported that the government, via Home Office contractor Serco, is offering landlords in the Midlands, North West, and East of England five-year “full rent” agreements to house asylum seekers. Serco, which already manages accommodation for over 30,000 asylum seekers, is actively seeking a wide range of properties, including HMOs, family homes, and former care homes.
This move comes as small boat arrivals are expected to rise with improving weather, and as the government looks for alternatives to costly hotel accommodation (£145 per night compared to £34 in private rentals). Meanwhile, the lettings sector remains critical of the proposed Renters Rights Bill, which many blame for landlords leaving the market.
