Wealden District Council’s Majors Planning Committee has unanimously approved the reserved matters application for a 58-house development in Framfield. The scheme, proposed by Hawridge Strategic Land, will be built on a greenfield site behind Old Nursery House.
Key Details & Concerns
Despite the unanimous vote for approval, councillors and the Parish Council raised concerns, primarily focusing on the mix of housing and the density of the scheme.
| Detail | Proposal | Concerns Raised |
| Total Units | 58 Houses | Layout deemed “dense, suburban and unsympathetic to rural character” by Framfield Parish Council. |
| Housing Mix | 23 x 3-bed, 16 x 4-bed, 7 x 5-bed | Councillors noted the disproportionate number of large dwellings, stating smaller properties are more needed locally. |
| Affordable Housing | 20 Units (approx. 34%) | No objection to the overall quantum of affordable housing. |
The Officer’s View: Council officers advised that while they acknowledged the desire for smaller homes, they could not refuse permission on that ground alone, as the council currently lacks an “adopted local policy” requiring developers to favour smaller properties.
The decision allows the development to move forward, despite objections regarding its large housing mix, density, and layout.
