MPs Face Fresh Scrutiny Over Landlord Interests

Former Labour MP Zarah Sultana has tabled an early day motion calling for members of parliament to be banned from renting out residential properties while in office.

The motion, submitted with tenants’ union ACORN, follows the resignation of former homelessness minister Rushanara Ali after controversy surrounding a rent increase on her property.

Sultana, who is working with Jeremy Corbyn to launch a new political party, argued that MPs should focus on addressing the housing crisis rather than profiting as landlords.

According to the parliamentary register of interests, 83 MPs currently declare rental income exceeding £10,000 a year. The Renters’ Rights Bill does not include any provisions on MPs being landlords, and the motion has limited support to date.
