Political Figures & EPC Standards: Chancellor’s Rental Property Rated ‘D’

A spotlight has been turned onto the stringent energy efficiency standards facing landlords, after it was revealed that Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ rental property holds an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D.

The revelation, reported by the Daily Telegraph, highlights the challenge many property owners face in meeting the government’s proposed regulations, which would mandate a minimum EPC rating of C for all rental properties from 2030.

  • Current Rating: The Chancellor’s home, which she is renting out while residing at Number 11 Downing Street, is currently rated EPC D.

  • Cost of Compliance: To bring the property up to the proposed minimum C rating, the EPC assessment suggests Reeves would need to spend between £4,900 and £7,550 on improvement works.

The news serves as a pointed reminder of the complexities and costs associated with energy efficiency upgrades—a burden that landlords across the UK are currently grappling with as regulatory deadlines approach.

Reeves can afford to pay for the upgrade, for she has avoided a large fine for not having a licence by saying sorry, a ploy not available to us mere mortal landlords. I wonder if her tenants will claim a rent repayment order?
