The Renters’ Rights Bill is now officially not expected to become law until early autumn.
Here’s the confirmed timeline:
- The Leader of the House of Commons, Lucy Powell MP, has not scheduled any debate time for the Bill next week, before MPs begin their summer recess
- Instead, consideration of amendments to the Bill has been scheduled for September 8th, a week after MPs return from their summer break
- The House of Lords had its scheduled Third Reading of the Bill on Monday, but was a brief debate, as expected. I would draw your attention to the speech by Baroness Scott where she called for a Rogue Landlords Bill
- More detailed consideration of the many amendments proposed by Peers will occur when the Bill returns to the Commons after the summer on September 8th
- It is likely that Royal Assent for the Bill will take place before the Commons goes into another recess on September 16th, when politicians attend their party conferences
